They need to build a digital experience that doesn't tie their hands with expensive proprietary licenses and high maintenance code. Invest in Open Source. Open-source software differs from other platforms in that it doesn't cost anything to license and use. How Can Nonprofits Make the Shift?

Registering a domain, purchasing hosting, installing an open source CMS like WordPress , and setting up a basic design theme can all be done affordably. Salesforce for Nonprofits is often looked to as a good choice because of their grant program that includes 10 free licenses.

MPower Open , an enterprise CRM, is both open source, and has great open APIs. Convio keeps drinking the “open&# coolaid (although they have a ways to go.) They released their Convio/Salesforce connector on Salesforce.com AppExchange. at 6:40 pm Thanks Michelle for the Convio props!

As I learned from attending the just completed Convio Summit in Austin, Texas, a discussion about APIs and databases fortunately doesnt have to be technical. In fact, ASPCA and Conservation International received recognition during Convios Summit, in part for their successful use of widgets on social networks such as MySpace.

Depending on the CRM, some require additional license fees for forms or APIs. I know that’s one more thing in a long list of considerations (and it’s generally more important to think about for the CRM – the CMS, if it is modern, and especially if it is open source, will provide few barriers to integration.)
