In 2010, I had an opportunity to do a Networked Nonprofit workshop in Kenya. When Otieno learned he needed a fourth surgery for his cancer, he reached out to Zawadi Nyong’o who was also an Africa Cancer Foundation volunteer. 77% knew someone who had been diagnosed with cancer. We did a little coaching.

Movements often involve a rallying cry, a widely recognized iconography, often a color (think pink for breast cancer), meaningful dates, repeated activities (from Freedom Rides to annual walks), and a shared goal for the common good. They all have a strong desire to mobilize public interest and advocate for systemic change.

Cell Slider , which is a crowdsourced online tool for cancer research that challenges the ponderous cancer research establishment. This project aims to speed up cancer research. I admit to being a bit envious of the Safaricom M-PESA.

Nonprofit Success Story: Ushahidi, a nonprofit headquartered in Kenya, used Kickstarter to launch production of BRCK, a Wi-Fi router and mobile modem built to withstand the elements. If your organization is a registered 501(c)(3), you're likely already in Razoo's system. If you don't meet your goal, there are no fees.

This session we focused on issues of health data collection--represented by the form shown here, which is a brand-new data collection instrument from Kenya (brought to the group by PATH's David Lubinski). This form is emblematic of the profound challenges in gathering accurate, reliable, consistent data at the field level.

My current favorite digital inclusion NGO is our newest TechSoup Global partner, Computers For Schools Kenya. I particularly like the Funny for Good Award on the serious topic of testicular cancer.
