Governments in developing countries are thinking seriously about how to provide quality secondary education, noted Gallucci and Roy, yet less known are which interventions are economical and will increase demand, access, and retention. This is where philanthropy comes in. Educating girls especially makes for long-term positive impact.

The goal of the Treaty is to make a copyright exception for the blind and other people with disabilities that stop them from reading print, and to make import and export of accessible content legal. My core point: Don’t put up bureaucratic barriers to access. The biggest challenge for access is that it’s expensive.

We discussed Chafee, especially in the context of the Amazon text-to-speech brouhaha, and the proposed international treaty that was tabled at the WIPO SCCR meeting in Geneva last month. We believe that print disabled people should be able to buy accessible books at the same time and at the same price as nondisabled people.

After life-altering experiences in Vietnam and India, and spending the night in a displaced persons camp in Turkey after the '99 earthquake, I knew my life couldn't continue on it's current course. The government of Qatar hosted the conference, and underwrote travel and accommodation. This meeting was a follow-up for me from my attendance earlier this year at the main WEF meeting in Davos , where I presented my proposal as part of the GRI. The coolest demo was of a high quality Arabic text-to-speech synthesizer.
