The Migel Medal, often called the highest honor in the blindness field, is awarded annually to one or two individuals whose careers exemplify exceptional accomplishments in the field. Helen Keller, who worked for AFB for many years, was on the original award board for its first twenty years, starting in 1937.

One of these sub-themes is “Accessibility: removing barriers and promoting disability-inclusive development.” Of course, accessibility is right up Benetech’s alley and the focus of our Literacy program. Thousands of ebooks pour into the library from over 168 publishers and textbook requests are fulfilled every month.

Twelve years ago, the Fund made its first grant to Benetech, in support of the then newly launched Bookshare , our accessible online library for people with disabilities that get in the way of reading print, including visual impairments and dyslexia. This pilot paved the way for our work in the education field.

In 2019 we awarded 6,363 in grants and scholarships worth more than $40 million. We all live in a world filled with technology, which can prove to be a help and hinderance to our work and personal lives. Several other staff members routinely present or attend trainings related to the foundation and our technology.

While our activities often creates jobs beyond the core high technology jobs around software development and user support, we don't see it as our core competency. The DDD student staff people work half days at DDD, proofing textbooks to make them accessible to students with print disabilities. Benetech is a tech social enterprise.

Betsy Beaumon, Benetech VP and General Manager of Bookshare During the event, our Bookshare staff offered demos of our Bookshare library and our Go Read accessible ebook reader for Android. A little over 4 years ago, we won a competitive contract award from the US Department of Education which took a bold risk on Bookshare.
