Policies and procedures give volunteers the information and structure they need to feel confident in their role, especially when they are just getting started. Procedures do not require Board approval but are critical for providing processes and structure to support the policies. Are there movies they might want to view?

Like many kids with autism, she needs a lot of structure in her life. She refused to see a PG-13 movie until she was actually 13. Any other suggestions for giving a young teen an iPad? She also has high-functioning autism. Looking at her now you'd never know I was once told that she might never speak in full sentences.

Each rose or carnation can include a gift card that tells a short story of how an extra $5 or $10 went to support domestic violence survivors or creating a safe space for LGBTQ teens. If structured properly like holiday gift wrapping, organizations can use VolunteerMatch to find support. Just like at the end of a John Hughes movie.

The recent flurry of restrictions that has sent teens fleeing? Structure the space with a clear story (and commensurate rules). Structure means context, and context means norms that people can easily grasp and deal with. When you think of MySpace, what is the first thing that comes to mind? The irritating design?

It’s ironic, when you think about the great pains that museums and libraries go to to create spaces that are “teen-positive,” that malls attract kids effortlessly with fluorescent lights and lousy music. If you want to keep up with movies or fashion in a physical space, you go to the mall. Plus, malls are cool.

So I can tell y’all that stuff, y’all, but I’ll tell you my most important job and how I really, really learned to hone my leadership skills was as solo mama to this teen who, my friends, she has the mack daddy of all summer jobs. Movie theater attendant. Flat structures have hidden hierarchy. Ooh, Manly.
