One of TechSoup's less-known areas of work has been to support and promote the work of other tech-for-good organizations, like Ushahidi in Kenya. Ushahidi has been developing open-source crisis mapping software for over eight years now. LABB created an Oil Spill Crisis Map in response to the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010.

It is a nonprofit tech company that develops free and open-source software for information collection, visualization, and crowdsourced interactive mapping to help mitigate disasters. Ushahidi was a NetSquared Mashup Challenge winner in the fabled 2008 Netsquared conference in Santa Clara, California.

One of the best examples of the use of APIs are Google Map mashups. These are using data in your own databases, and grabbing maps from google maps and putting them inside your application. I have dreams of applications that combine, say, available bed space in shelters and soup kitchens, all mapped for people to find.

It would have been nice to have heard from a circuit-rider or "for-little-profit" integrator/consultant type person, and maybe another nonprofit type (a moderately tech savvy ED?) There was also a backchannel chat room, which was really useful and interesting. It seemed that only Blackbaud had APIs you have to pay for.

The EU is currently coming up with regulations for tech and power consumption. Outside of the actual tech, you will also need to pay closer attention to policies. Disruptive Technology #9: Mashups and Enterprise Portals. Is it OK to put client home address information into a public mapping website? The questions are big.
