The real-time web has also revolutionized the way we support local communities in disaster. Ushahidi, an open source project originally deployed in Kenya to report post-election violence has since been downloaded and deployed for many other events and disasters, including Haiti, Chile, and Japan. We can’t focus just on money.

Many years ago, NetSquared hosted challenges and conferences to highlight and bring together fledging social entrepreneurs. For example, in post-earthquake Haiti, Dd trained and empowered local women to track and document incidents of gender-based violence. " Digital Democracy (Dd) was a prize winner in that challenge.
