In the local context, Kenyan’s give an extremely high proportion of their earnings as donations (cc. The lack of trust between NGOs and local Kenyans and the expectancy that NGOs are funded from outside Kenya are the key reasons for limited local fundraising towards NGO in Kenya.

When those NGOs receive funding they usually know how to use the funds very efficiently and are able to grow. Those initial fundings rarely come from online donations, most are community-based initiatives, companies, and local government incentives. They also get training and support from the Brazil Foundation and Doare teams.

CDI director Javier Figueroa reports: Thanks to the rapid response from CDI Chile's team and the initial funding from the Canadian Embassy, 10 days after the earthquake, the community of Lota has been the first to receive access to communications using the mobile telecentre. The trip has been supported by the Canadian Embassy and UNESCO.
