Over the past year, I've noticed a strange trend in the calls I receive about upcoming participatory museum projects: the majority of them are being planned for teen audiences. Why are teens over-represented in participatory projects? Teens are a known (and somewhat controllable) entity. The first of these reasons is practical.

I love Flickr Originally uploaded by jodi_tripp. For those who haven't seen it, Flickr is a photo-sharing site. So what makes Flickr so useful? Where else can you find Pakistani bathroom signage or Mexican biker teens while researching a project? Now I always use Flickr. Okay, pop quiz. Where do you go?

The point, in the context of this conversation, is that a minority of social media users are creators—people who write blog posts, upload photos onto Flickr, or share homemade videos on YouTube. There are so many more people who join social networks, who collect and aggregate favored content, and critique and rate books and movies.

If you want the quick and dirty look at the conference, check out the ephemera tagged #mw2008 (twitter posts, flickr images, a blog entires). Flickr's Commons project - Flickr is offering up its powerful community tools for museum photo collections. The Walker Art Center is turning its teen website over to the teens.

It will be interesting to see if this advice holds true for the voters of the future based on Dannah Boyd's post " What i mean when i say "email is dead" in reference to teens. CHBN provides a free service for broadcasting member-generated political video content. "Do young people have email accounts?

They left and wrote over 100 positive reviews of the evening, 12 positive reviews of the museum, and shared over 300 photos of their revels on Flickr. They left with free tshirts branded with the museum's name (and other sponsors), wrote about it on a wiki and shared photos on Flickr. To some people, these events may sound like losers.
