In 2006, the Aquarium sponsored a letter-writing campaign in the museum, giving visitors an opportunity to send postcards to the governor expressing support for the establishment of marine protected areas on California's central coast. But I'm highly suspicious of most of these. This amounts to messageless activism, which doesn't help anyone.

Here's how it works: define a word properly, and the site's sponsors will donate the equivalent of ten grains of rice to the UN WFP. Free Rice is linked to a sister site, poverty.com, which disseminates information about world hunger and other issues. Free Rice applies a simple, powerful consequence to scoring.

He ran into Congo. He was there for about a month, and then war in Congo was breaking out. He was the first person that we sponsored to our High School Education Program, and he was able to complete his education. There are all kinds of issues there and what root problem was actually being solved? It had been bombed.

The way we do that is by asking every single woman around the world to sponsor one woman at a time by sending her $27 a month, along with a letter to start a communication link between the two women. The women that we are servicing in Congo, where, if they are lucky, they get $0.20 You get her picture. You get her letters.
