It is a nonprofit tech company that develops free and open-source software for information collection, visualization, and crowdsourced interactive mapping to help mitigate disasters. Ushahidi was a NetSquared Mashup Challenge winner in the fabled 2008 Netsquared conference in Santa Clara, California.

One of TechSoup's less-known areas of work has been to support and promote the work of other tech-for-good organizations, like Ushahidi in Kenya. During the early days of our Netsquared project , we held big annual conferences to showcase and fund innovative tech for good. These folks do astonishing work. spanhidden.

Over the past 10 years, the mashup of the web and our personally identifiable data (PID) has grown up. The organizations that prize PID and reduce the silos between tech and marketing stand to benefit the most. The tech to connect Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, cell, email, addresses and other PID is here -- and it improves by the day.

Around the time of the Nonprofit Technology Network ’s 2008 NTC conference, an even brighter light bulb went on. I wrote a blog post called, Mashups, Open APIs, and the Future of Collaboration in the Nonprofit Tech Sector. I left that session knowing exactly the direction I wanted to take Social Actions. Defeated in fact.
