The app was a finalist in Microsoft's 2011 Imagine Cup, a student technology competition. Our Time (Facebook) is a nonprofit dedicated to youth empowerment through the voting process. The iPad app provides free videos to K-12 students on various topics, including math, science, finance, and history.

Our work started by focusing on long term empowerment projects. Last year disaster relief once again became the main focus of our organization as we activated and served over 4 million meals in Peru, Houston, Puerto Rico, and California. It really showcases our efforts moving from beyond just relief to empowerment.

I started doing this back in 2007 , when we won our first big federal contract for Bookshare, to take it from 3,000 students back then to more than 350,000 students now. Student privacy. Carol’s social enterprise in Nairobi employs over 100 students working to proofread books for our Bookshare digital library.

So there is a green wave going to be coming through California and what we want to do is make sure that it also hits the Oakland area and, in addition, that the people who benefit from this green economy are the people who need those jobs the most.
