T, December 10th, the international community is observing Human Rights Day to commemorate the 63rd anniversary of the creation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 2011 has been an amazing year for human rights defenders. This past year, our HRP team helped the human rights movement achieve great things.

It wasn’t until 1993, when a reconstruction of these events by American journalist Mark Danner first appeared in The New Yorker , that the full story of the El Mozote massacre was brought to light and sent shock waves through the international community. Dave suggested we rename our idea Martus, the Greek word for “witness.”

So, while it may very difficult to find Internet content from Burma, it is getting onto the Internet. It isn't dumb dumb.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting one of our longtime Martus partners in Thailand, The Network for Human Rights Documentation – Burma ( ND-Burma ). It was so gratifying to see firsthand how Martus , a free and open-source software tool developed by Benetech, is empowering people to be the change they wish to see.

It is open source software, but we're experimenting with a revenue model to sustain the project over the long term. Human Rights Patrick Ball recently spent a month at the International Criminal Court (ICC), where he held office hours and helped prosecutors use quantitative data and statistical analysis to pursue war crimes cases.
