It’s a great time to start fundraising contests if you’re managing or helping run a fall fundraising event. But as you go about your planning this season, I’d like to get you thinking about contests a little differently. What’s great about task-based contests is that you’re encouraging participants to use online tools.

Teach Them to Fundraise and Provide Samples. Hold contests. Create contests that reward fundraising activity. Provide samples of everything. Supply sample fundraising emails, Facebook posts, tweets, phone scripts, thank you notes, approved logos, etc. So, how can you help supporters become fundraising superstars?

This group will be tough to motivate, so focus on incentives, contests and convenience. Make fundraising easy by including sample Facebook posts or emails they can forward to friends. Include reminders about deadlines and contests. Highlight team-specific contests, like best theme or largest team. Team captains.

Make it easy for them by providing samples of everything they’ll need. Sample tweets, emails, Facebook posts, employee memos, phone scripts, communication plans, and anything else they’ll need to inspire and manage their team. Include a sample script of what to say to team members. Providing Resources. And I mean everything.

Include a sample email and talk about the impact of gifts ( Did you know just raising $25 can provide sick kids with a toy this holiday?). In 2011, Blackbaud and the Run Walk Ride Fundraising Council conducted an online survey of individuals who have participated in at least one run, walk or ride event in the last two years.
