The were active on Myspace, YouTube, and creating Facebook Groups long before most of the companies that are often praised for being the pioneers of social media. They acted on instinct that social networks were going to be transformative tools for cause awareness and fundraising campaigns, and they were right.

Innovation in online fundraising was driven by the release of new technology, such as email marketing services like MailChimp in 2001, the launch of WordPress ( a content management system now used by 44% of nonprofits worldwide ) in 2003, and social networking websites beginning with Myspace in 2005.

on their Twitter avatars, and then spread them throughout the Twitterverse. It’s an easy and effective first step for launching an awareness campaign on Twitter. After you record a message, you are given a URL for the message that you can post on Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, etc.

Your supporters also want to see what your staff and working space look like – the human beings behind the avatar, if you will. Make new friends (Google+) and keep the old (Myspace). They move with you from one site to the next and maybe in the case of Myspace, back again. Google+ is growing rapidly and traffic is increasing.

Similar to the early days of Myspace and its users mastering HTML hacks and widgets, Snapchat has an equally dedicated user base of young people that pride themselves on becoming skilled at Lenses, Filters, Stickers, and other Snapchat tips, tricks, and hacks. In fact, Snapchat is giving rise to anew type of artist – the Snapchat artist.

For others, it is a day of political significance to raise awareness around women's rights. The organization is asking supporters to change their Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook avatars at 1:10 on Friday, March 6th to the "oneten" avatar. Numerous nonprofits and NGOs are organizing events and campaign to celebrate.

An interesting point about using MySpace: "It can definitely be used for recruitment and as a mass communications tool, particularly for younger voters who tend to use email less. The key is to move MySpace friends onto normal advocacy lists as soon as possible. An the choices continue to multiply, this beta from AOL, uncutvideo.
