This last September, Benetech won a 3 million dollar award over one year from OSEP for a project we call Leveraging Impact through Technology, or, very appropriately, LIT. Exciting new tools, including a free, open source Android ebook reader and a free web-based ebook reader along with an accessible bookshelf in “the cloud.”

Today, we are poised at a moment in time where we can transcend the limitations of past book technologies and bring the power of books to all humans. However, as a technology, printed books come with serious challenges for some communities (like blind people) that technology can unlock. Love of the print book. We can do better!

Benetech was a proud endorser of these objections (under our legal organizational name of Beneficent Technology, Inc.). We all want the same ebook that people without disabilities buy (sorry, I mean license) to work perfectly well for people who are blind, physically disabled or dyslexic.

of legally blind children in public and residential schools used braille as their primary reading medium. We are confident that technology can continue to improve the quality of electronic braille such that a blind consumer can expect both immediate AND high quality braille on demand.

Libraries for people who are blind or dyslexic are the primary source of accessible books in audio, large print or braille. Imagine what a regular library would look like if it couldn’t stock books that could be purchased by the general public! People with disabilities are the most logical customers for digital ebooks.
