Thirteen students produced three projects that layered participatory activities onto an exhibition of artwork from the permanent collection of the Henry Art Gallery. This post shares my reflections on the projects and five things I learned from their work. When activities were not facilitated, people were often too timid to interact.

Helene Moglen, professor of literature, UCSC After a year of tinkering, the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History is now showing an exhibition, All You Need is Love , that embodies our new direction as an institution.

It also includes reflections from the exhibit team on the project. Facilitated/Unfacilitated Blend When we started this course, I really pushed the students to think about ways to induce unfacilitated interactions among strangers. I love facilitated experiences, but I worry that they aren't scalable to every visitor.

This post is even more relevant today to the broader conversation about audience diversity in the arts than when it was published three years ago. Most large American museums are reflections of white culture. In the summer, they spend 8 weeks working full-time at the Taylor Center learning and facilitating public programs.
