Earlier in 2013, I was amazed to visit one of the new “Studio” spaces at the Denver Art Museum. The Denver Art Museum is no stranger to community collaborations, but we’ve been dipping in our toe a little more deeply when it comes to developing permanent participatory installations.

Our friends and family stepped up and supported this local branch of the Special Olympics, thousands of miles away from their home towns, securing donation dollars for the nonprofit that they would have never seen otherwise. Denver Zoo. Are there works of art you want to restore? That’s the beauty of crowd fundraising.

Art, however, does not come to museums pre-hardened. At the museum of art and history where I work, we are grappling with the question of how to help people enjoy themselves while keeping the art and artifacts safe. The level of touching, especially of art, has increased. Engagement with local artists.

Louis Post-Dispatch published the kind of "how sausage is made" story that rarely gets written about the arts. Outdoor movies at the art museum? Why do we count participants in an art activity for families at a community center but not members of the Rotary Club to whom I give a presentation about the museum? Louis count it.
