One theme we’re seeing over and over again is how the pandemic changed the way volunteer managers educate and train their volunteers and clients, often using Zoom or other video sharing platforms. That was the silver lining.

In 1993, President Clinton formalized national service, like Kennedy did with the Peace Corps, and created AmeriCorps. Since its formation, AmeriCorps has served thousands of organizations and nearly 3/4 of AmeriCorps' members continue to serve after they complete their AmeriCorps service, and often go into public service.

In the spring and summer of 2021, with funding from AmeriCorps, our research team held focus groups with volunteer administrators about their technology use in the pandemic. So, on one hand, involuntary reliance on video platforms and social media paid new dividends in accessibility for volunteers and clients.

And I tell my students that Ill give to any of the worthy causes they pour their hearts into, but they have to ask me in person (not on Facebook)! More YouTube videos? Currently (on my lowly grad student budget), I only give money to one nonprofit org. I dont mind administrative spending, but I bristle at high fundraising costs.
