Privilege celebrates privilege. Many American Blacks have been here long enough to be in DAR, but cannot travel freely in America. What does this have to do with museums? It is why in the great museum upheavals of 2020 no white male director of import ended up getting toppled. He was not only high cast but privileged.

This summer, we opened two exhibitions at my museum that are highly relevant to local culture. One is about the Grateful Dead ( Dear Jerry ), the other about the dawn of surfing in the Americas ( Princes of Surf ). These two pieces of wood are like the Shroud of Turin of surfing in the Americas. Killer content. Muscle and bone.
