The goal of the Treaty is to make a copyright exception for the blind and other people with disabilities that stop them from reading print, and to make import and export of accessible content legal. My core point: Don’t put up bureaucratic barriers to access. The biggest challenge for access is that it’s expensive.

The DMCA 1201 ruling on ebook access through DRM circumvention was clearly aimed at us: should we take up the challenge? No, we’re not being sued (and we want to keep it that way).

We discussed Chafee, especially in the context of the Amazon text-to-speech brouhaha, and the proposed international treaty that was tabled at the WIPO SCCR meeting in Geneva last month. I actually think they’re getting less by stopping people from buying ebooks who are unlikely to buy audio books at higher prices.

Let me give two specific examples that came up in my first conversation with a lawyer about the proposed bill: 1. We provide accessible ebooks that can be spoken aloud, turned into Braille or large print. The problem is that we provide technology that allows for security, privacy and circumvention.
