We need an ecosystem of activists, academics, funders, professionals, policymakers, and associations striving together towards common goals. Heck, I've spent lots of time participating in those ways myself.

Our Time (Facebook) is a nonprofit dedicated to youth empowerment through the voting process. This student-built app lets players take on the role of a ghost detective who encounters local residents who haunt the community. The app was a finalist in Microsoft's 2011 Imagine Cup, a student technology competition.

Desai came to the Women of Color Resource Center from a Deputy Director role at United for a Fair Economy. We are based in Oakland, but we do work nationally, and in many cases globally, but our funding is always under constraints. AD: W hite allies have held a huge role for the Women of Color Resource Center historically.

The slogan is "Green Collar Jobs, not Jails" and what we're trying to promote a big vision which includes being able to employ formerly incarcerated people from the Oakland area, "at risk" -- quote unquote -- people from this area into jobs which don't hurt the environment, that actually help sustain us as a community.
