In 1989, during a week in the Sinai desert in Egypt, I was invited into a Bedouin compound. The only nonprofits on TV were the large, child sponsorship organizations running direct response ads --or, if they got lucky, a local organization covered on the local news. There were no electric lights or modern appliances.
