In other words, a new kind of talkback board or participatory educational program. There is a simple leaderboard and each player's cards are aggregated on a personal dashboard. What's GOOD about Signtific is that it encourages people to reflect on others' submissions and react to them in a series of intentional ways.

While there, I was lucky to get to experience a highly participatory exhibition that the MIA mounts once a decade: Foot in the Door. I also think it would be useful for the MIA to aggregate blog posts, Flickr photos, etc. Yes, people get highly energized in the space and have great conversations about art and art-making.

I was amazed by the number of conversations I had when I arrived at FreelanceCamp that went something like this: Me: Have you lived in Santa Cruz for a long time? This positions the museum at the center of the action, gives you an easy way to track online activity, and provides a useful service for participants to aggregate their content.

It also includes reflections from the exhibit team on the project. Random passers-by got hooked and spent twenty minutes carefully reading each post-it, writing responses, creating chains of conversation and spin-off questions and pieces of advice. And then on April 29, the conversation really got rolling. I don't know if that was their original plan or a reaction to our poor use of the wiki, but it certainly didn't reflect our supposed digital chops. The participatory "ask" is high--to create original content. The goal of a wiki is to aggregate content of interest.
