In an effort to understand why the violence there is still happening, and what I can do to help, I've called in for two of the monthly conference calls for Sudan Activists produced by ENOUGH , the Genocide Intervention Network , STAND: A Student Anti-Genocide Coalition , and the Save Darfur Coalition.

In that spirit, I'm making only three 2009 Have Fun Do Good Resolutions Write each month to the woman from Sudan who I am sponsoring through Women for Women International. Adult volunteers read once a week, one-on-one with two students for 30 minutes each. Clearly, I need to do less.

One of those individuals is Paul Ohisa, and he's a refugee from Sudan. He was able to get some work digging pit latrines to put himself through one semester of his remaining high school education, and then he ran out of money. His dream was to go back to Sudan, and to contribute and help rebuild. We would bring students.

College students have led the fight on issues. We announced a contest to create a game to address issue in Sudan. We're going to give out 10 $25K grants - one game in particular - University of Denver students created a game called Squeezed. Money went into the AI how the computer thinks versus flashy graphics.

Sometimes, this even included an army of college students going door-to-door, ICU nurses convincing hospital staff to join, businessmen calling meetings to let their employees know about the contest, and other offline work. When people know exactly what their money is going towards, they feel most comfortable donating. Oh the hours!!

As part of the anti-genocide moment, we raise both money and political will for civilian protection initiatives around the world. For example, since 2005, the US has allocated over $4 billion in humanitarian and peacekeeping and development assistance to the people of Sudan and Eastern Chad.
