On the recent NTEN community call someone asked the panel to name 5 vendors (other than Blackbaud and Convio) to whom we’d send a CRM system RFP for a $100 million nonprofit. Provide data integrity tools to keep the data clean. There were few full solutions designed for large nonprofits to begin with.

Kintera opens a Developers Challenge. Developers who code solutions that integrate with Kintera using their open API platform, Connect , can win $15,000 or $5,000 (not the $25 K their big logo seems to suggest – that’s just the total they will award.) Setup of all three has a one time fee.

I looked over Allan Benamer’s post on the Convio and Kintera initiatives, I looked harder at the Convio Open and Kintera Connect docs, and I also had a chat with some Kintera folk. Allan is right – the Kintera API is more comprehensive, and provides for more flexibility than the Convio API.

At first blush, although Kintera officially got out the door first, announcing Connect weeks ago, and delivering the APIs and docs on Friday, their play is a good start, but Convio, announcing Open tomorrow, appears to be ahead in terms of providing real openness. Kintera’s Connect has an API that can do some very important things.

Almost a year ago, NTEN hosted a field wide discussion about the need for nonprofit tech vendors, particularly CRM systems for online fundraising, to offer open APIs. Part Vb:APIs October 20, 2006 This morning, I sat in on the " Great Open API Debate " hosted by NTEN. First off, a tip o’ the hat to NTEN for organizing this, the participants of the panel for an interesting conversation, and Mark Bolgiano from the Council on Foundations for awesome moderation. That’s good news.
