I''ve now been the executive director of the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History for three years. Participatory work can be very labor-intensive. We''ve gotten pretty good at doing this at museum programs, but it gets more complicated when we are working with a bonded group like a homeless center or a school tour.

Sometimes it's a homeless person. When visitors share their brilliance, it brings the museum to life. A personal history. This is the participatory museum, played out loud. This is the magic a piano in the lobby makes. We've now had a piano in the MAH lobby for several months. Sometimes a lover's duet. A special skill.
