Our breakthrough in the conception of Martus came in 2000, when I was looking to expand Benetech to new frontiers of social good beyond our origins—helping disabled people access books in what is now our Global Literacy program. Here, we realized, was an opportunity to create real, lasting social impact.

You can imagine the impact of Bookshare.org going from a $1 million per year enterprise in 2006 to over $7 million in 2008. We've also had major efforts in Burma, Sri Lanka and Guatemala, to name a few; efforts we expect to continue this year. Route 66 Literacy was put on the back burner last year because it ran out of funding.
