The term social enterprise is in common use globally to describe enterprises that have a social welfare intent. The Wikipedia entry on this topic is extensive, and the most common usage in the marketplace is for the socially beneficial flavor of “social enterprise,” not the Salesforce one-year-old marketing campaign.

The same sort of engine which powers Wikipedia can be put to work across a number of different “platforms”. They are generally early adopters of new technologies and consider themselves to be global people. I think this is connected to what Rheingold's Attention Literacy piece, but I have go back and read it again.
