At Geekcorps Mali, our approach was: through great engineering feats attempt to somehow lower the costs of access, while hopefully creating sustainable “business models” in the process. Please keep in mind . While clever, our solutions could simply not overcome the maddening math nor achieve the requisite access levels to scale.

One key point is that Internet bolsters strong ties directly and indirectly. Directly, because Internet allows for more frequent, trivial “ambient” communication and that is the bedrock of strong-tie formation. I’ve been watching some people’s minds work on the service for years.
