Today, Bookshare serves over 330,000 American students with a rapidly growing collection of hundreds of thousands of accessible ebooks. We first extended Bookshare services internationally in 2008 with the launch of Bookshare in India. Of course, in India and other developing countries, the gap is even larger.

These ebooks can quickly be turned into Braille, large print or be read aloud by a synthetic voice synthesizer. We’re grateful to our socially responsible publishing partners who give us world rights to their titles, even though they are not required to do so under international copyright law.

As the operators of Bookshare in the USA, which was made possible through a great exception in our copyright law here, we would love to make all of our books available to people with qualifying disabilities around the world. We expect that many of the big issues with the current text will get ironed out this week.

Under our copyright exception, we simply buy a copy of the needed print book, scan it using optical character recognition, and create an accessible ebook. With the advances in publishing and technology, it is now within reach to ensure equal access to books for all.

However, the time has come when we need a really smart attorney to join Benetech and help us navigate the intersection of technology and social good. Right now, we have multiple law school clinics that would love to tackle new projects with us, projects we actually have but lack the bandwidth to pursue.
