This week, Benetech’s DIAGRAM Center has announced the release of an open source web application for creating and editing crowdsourced image descriptions in books used by students with print disabilities. DIAGRAM stands for Digital Image and Graphics Resources for Accessible Materials.

The increasing focus on digital content, rather than its printed form, and the shift to electronic distribution of ebooks pave new avenues for removing the barriers to accessibility. At Benetech, we want to ensure that in this brave new world of digital content, braille is as available as any other ebook format to those who want it.

Bookshare is dramatically exceeding its five-year collection and member targets at the close of the fourth year of our Bookshare for Education (B4E) project funded by the U.S. Through the LIT project, we’re adding many new innovations to the groundwork laid by the B4E project, with a focus on three core areas: content, tools, and utilization.

After all, in the world of eBooks, ten years is pretty old! We now have a free, open source reading app for you called Go Read. In 2012, this meant a growing push to add image descriptions, especially to math and science content. DIAGRAM This increase in accessible images would not have been possible without great tools.
