At the same time I have watched organization struggle to engage with Facebook supporters in meaningful ways using just the actions Facebook has provided; Like, Share, or Comment. The Facebook App gives organizations dozens of nonprofit-relevant social actions to engage supporters with directly on their own Facebook pages.

Why aren’t they commenting on our content and mission and becoming a part of the conversation? Liking, sharing and commenting on Facebook allows us to assert who we are as a person and admit publicly that we agree with something. And nothing is more discouraging than seeing all that hard work not translate into trackable actions.

I wrote recently about spam in the form of blog comments. The first sentence in the above comment yields over 400 million hits! There's been a deluge recently, and I want to call out some that look like they could be legit. Fortunately, my anti-spam filters (Akismet and Bad Behavior) caught them. Many of the comments critical of the proposed treaty come from parties that object in principle to copyright exceptions, rather than having a direct stake in the issue at hand.

Some of the lamest spam I see comes in the form of comments on my blog posts. Some sounds convincing, but my spam filters (Akismet and Bad Behavior) are incredibly good at catching them. It's particularly entertaining when the spam is trying to link to one of my spam of the day posts.). Here's an example.

It’s been two weeks since Facebook launched a refresh to it’s blog Comments Box Plugin and the reviews have been mixed. The new Facebook Comments are no exception and nonprofits should think carefully before jumping to implement the system on their blog or website. Advantages.

For the first time, readers could comment and share their opinions publicly on a piece of online content. Comments were taken very seriously, and in some cases, coming up with response was an agonizing, overthought experience. Also interesting about today’s nonprofit blogging is that many nonprofits have turned off commenting.

However, Zarella found that text generates more comments on Facebook, which I believe is much more valuable then a passive “thumbs up, see ya later.” People Comment the Most on Text Updates. While text updates were commented on the most, they were one of the least Shared posts on Facebook.

Read comments carefully and be sure to have the author/poster/someone from your organization answer questions. You don’t want to monopolize the conversation, but keep an eye on the comments and pop in when the time’s right. Send them the post ahead of time, so they’re well prepared to make a real value-add comment.

What would compel you to like or comment on that video? If your video connects powerfully with your supporters they’ll like, comment on and share the video with their friends. High video engagement should be your goal because social media algorithms prioritize content that get lots of reactions, comments and shares.

Objective comments take into account the audience point of view and desired outcomes. Subjective comments, along the lines of “I like it” or “that color bugs me,” are not particularly useful in the evaluation process because they don’t allow the options to be judged strategically.
