I'm working on what has become my annual holiday post at BlogHer on the topic: Helping kids understand why it is better to give than to receive. I have many examples from my own children and those of Sharing Foundation stakeholders - many who are adoptive parents and have encouraged their children to give back to Cambodia.

There is a connection to something that Tara Hunt mentioned at BlogHer. She asked a great question about "virtual gift economy." " She mentioned Lewis Hyde 's work and referenced the virtual gifts on Facebook. We met via Facebook and contributed to my online campaign. More later.

I have two favorites: The Sharing Foundation which supports children in Cambodia and Creative Commons.

I was first introduced to the concept of the gift economy and pay it forward many years ago when I was the community builder for a first generation online network for artists, called ArtsWire. However, in what is considered to be in the true spirit of gift economics, many times giving is done without any expectation of reciprocity.

My fellow BlogHer co-editor, Beth Kanter , has launched a fundraising campaign using ChipIn. ChipIn allows a group of people to collect money online whether it is for a birthday gift, a party or a fundraiser. She sits on their board. 750 will cover her college fees and living expenses.
