In 2009 , students built a participatory exhibit from scratch. Thirteen students produced three projects that layered participatory activities onto an exhibition of artwork from the permanent collection of the Henry Art Gallery. When activities were not facilitated, people were often too timid to interact.

Helene Moglen, professor of literature, UCSC After a year of tinkering, the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History is now showing an exhibition, All You Need is Love , that embodies our new direction as an institution. So many museum exhibitions relegate the participatory bits in at the end. The Love Lounge I LOVE. with sharpies.

Diane is both visionary and no-nonsense about deconstructing the barriers that many low-income and non-white teenagers and families face when entering a museum. Most large American museums are reflections of white culture. What started with 15 students in 1997 has grown to support 200 students per year.

In April, I gave 13 UW graduate students a simple challenge: make an exhibit that gets strangers to talk to each other. Last month, student Nicole Robert wrote about the concept for Advice: Give it, Get it, Flip it, Fuck it. I love facilitated experiences, but I worry that they aren't scalable to every visitor.
