Similar discussions surfaced last year during Iran’s Green Revolution, when many people on social media overlaid a green shade to their avatars and profile pictures to show their solidarity with the people of Iran. Yet due to old fashion organizing on the ground, the protests have escalated.

Bless the volunteers and interns, but unless they have experience or training in writing web conent, publishing e-newsletters, and launching and maintaining online fundraising campaigns, then they are not going to understand the bigger picture of the strategy behind utilizing social media. You need a good avatar.

In their excitement to share what they did, they posted pictures. Unfortunately, they did not have releases for the children's pictures. Should you have a dress and behavior code for staff and others who become "friends", including their avatars? On one site, she clicks on an employee.

Each board member had a give of 500, a give of 5,000 and if it was in the green for that quarter, that meant they were on track. That should be one of the expectations of the board members because that is going to give them a true picture of what it means to serve the clients in the community. So they’re not getting off easy.

In Iran the regime hasn’t yet shown itself to be as savvy as the green movement. I think underlying slacktivism isn’t enough – you can’t just turn your profile green. Like Sri Lanka where pictures weren’t getting out. It can be broad but shallow.
