Rare, which is based in Arlington, Virginia, uses Miradi in all its worldwide campaigns to promote biodiversity and has translated the Miradi software into Bahasa Indonesia, Mandarin and Spanish. Elaina says that Miradi helped her determine what knowledge was needed by local residents to adopt behaviors that promote clean water.

What’s the point in using “global” tools (social media) for local organizing? From @amoration: I find we’re always both global & local, so many of us travel frequently that virtual organizing tools are essential even for “local&# endeavors. Social media used to engage local supporters to act globally.

About 700 people participated over two days, including some who had traveled to Santa Cruz from London, Indonesia, and across the US. There were some locals who stumbled in unaware, but mostly, this was an insider's event for people who know and love Ze's particular brand of emotional connection mediated through online participation.

You can use different technologies for these things, as easy or as difficult as you want. But it's a much broader audience than just your family. it doesn't have to be completely narrow, but you're going to get more of an audience if it's about a particular issue, rather than just everything. Because you're just sending links.
