Art, however, does not come to museums pre-hardened. At the museum of art and history where I work, we are grappling with the question of how to help people enjoy themselves while keeping the art and artifacts safe. The level of touching, especially of art, has increased. all over the place. This was amazing.

I spent some time playing with this question last week at the Milwaukee Art Museum, a large general museum that is moving toward redesign of the permanent galleries. I published The Participatory Museum in March (with help from many of you!) While I did learn a ton from my experiences, especially in far-flung places and small museums, it was also exhausting.
