I've been reflecting on some of the points made about the pros/cons of the NpTech Tag and the comment that Laura Quinn left here. I scan the tagged items every week and do a pattern analysis and summary of these undifferentiated items. Obviously, it ain't no taxonomy and it shouldn't substitute for one. I admit it.

How are they different from taxonomies? Gavin's post does a great job explaining the definitions and the advantages of a taxonomy over a folksonomy. A traditional rigorous taxonomy scheme includes "synoynm ring" - basically, just a bunch of synonyms mapped together - why not use that to standardize the tags(i.e.
