How are they different from taxonomies? Gavin's post does a great job explaining the definitions and the advantages of a taxonomy over a folksonomy. I scan the tagged items every week and do a pattern analysis and summary of these undifferentiated items. Obviously, it ain't no taxonomy and it shouldn't substitute for one. I'm constantly looking for information related to work and I a big bookmarker. I think that the scanning the NpTech Tag can provide a zeitgeist.
