He lead us on a series of improvisation exercises designed to teach important skills for networked leaders: empathy, awareness, celebrating failure, being open to change and more. Okay, I admit the improvisation work is a lot of fun, but there is a lot of learning embedded in the reflection and debriefs. Of course, we messed up.

In the work in Bolivia, we really saw, sitting around that table, women really talking to each other and seeing reflections of themselves; and watching the connection that then became available was worth all of it. I think it started--I know it started--when I was very young, although I probably wasn't aware what was going on at the time.

The homicide rate, as people are probably aware of, has just really increased in the last few years in Oakland, where I live. Just a way of being that didn't have the depth of feeling and self-reflection, that I just felt like we needed. We have four initiatives. And I felt like we have these sort of one-liner, sitcom conversations.
