So often, government control, or just lack of access to information and media, prevents people from really being able to be educated and informed about serious issues that are going on around them. I had an amazing opportunity to cover the civil war, but also to cover a lot of the human rights issues that were emerging as a result of the war.

I've now documented women's lives in 40 countries, over the past 10 or 12 years, and everywhere I went, I found women who were helping each other, local women. A high school English teacher in Zimbabwe, whose name is Betty Makoni , began hearing stories from her students after school, that they had been raped.
