Empowerment for our participants comes from connecting to an inner wisdom that is often kept hidden from public view, but is a place of extraordinary innate strength and well being. Sometimes we have volunteers who will pack Traveling Postcards in their suitcase and give them away while they are traveling. We have come a long way!

Our work started by focusing on long term empowerment projects. Last year disaster relief once again became the main focus of our organization as we activated and served over 4 million meals in Peru, Houston, Puerto Rico, and California. We have a recipe for how to address disaster quickly and effectively: kitchens and volunteers.

and "Let's call that person, figure out if they'll volunteer to do that, put it down on paper, get the designers to bang it out, see if it works, and throw it out to the community." Most of our staff did start as a volunteer; about 90 percent of our staff started as volunteers. I am very much a social entrepreneur.
