Erickson founded FORGE (Facilitating Opportunities for Refugee Growth and Empowerment) in 2003 when she was a 20 year-old junior studying public policy at Stanford University. FORGE serves 60,000 refugees in three different refugee camps in Southern Africa, and is an official operating partner of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR ).

The essence of Dining for Women is connection, education, and self-empowerment. We had a group that went to Kenya to visit BOMA Fund , and we went to Uganda to visit the BeadforLife program. I took my 14-year-old with me to Kenya this past March, and it was a life-changing experience. You've also added a travel program.

Britt Bravo: In so many of the groups you profiled, the women were using the arts for education, empowerment, or healing. The children are ages 6-16, and they're making huge strides by leading a national movement against child rape in Zimbabwe. My last question is always, "What would you like to ask me?" PG: My website!

Alli: Interesting question, like what is the road that gets us anywhere, I think they're always somewhat circuitous and unplanned. So, last spring Ella Baker Center, to launch its new program Reclaim the Future, took a big role in the United Nations World Environment Day Conference that was happening here in San Francisco.

Increasingly, rape of women is being used as a tool of war, not just in large scale wars as we saw in the Serbian and Bosnian conflict, but as we saw recently in Kenya and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She made it almost impossible for me not to look at those questions. I also think I do this work for my daughter.
