Braided River, a Seattle-based nonprofit publishing company, has undertaken 16 conservation projects to date with just three staff people. When she ran the Nature Conservancy in Louisiana, 200,000 acres were set aside. Actually the biggest need was for laptop bags to serve as suitcases for refugees. CACRC is an social enterprise in that it does not need to rely on grants to keep operating. They came from Alaska, from ad agencies on Madison Avenue, from everywhere.

We also work with some socially responsible businesses like Green Mountain Coffee Roasters; we are working with Annie's Organic right now, and so a broad mix of people who are trying to make the world a better place. In a lot of ways, conservatives built their base starting on the real cultural and not necessarily political level.
