I was there last week for the eLearning Guild’s FocusOn Learning 2017 conference. In conferences, there’s definitely a sense of comradery: you’re an instructional designer? The eLearning Guild gave me a speaker for being a speaker (very punny.). This was a great conference with a good bunch of people.

People are so engrossed in the game that they are watching their phone as opposed to their surroundings, and placing themselves in serious jeopardy; all for the reward of “catching ‘em all” before their friends. People are fascinated with this new world layered on top of the one they have already been living in.

Live documents have made an appearance in some realms allowing for people to not only share an assignment, but make changes on the same verbiage from across the world, while interacting, providing positive feedback, and communicating department intentions across a variety of mediums. Gamification. But, where can they go from here?

The answer may seem obvious, but that’s not readily apparent in the eLearning we design. In the past, companies needed people who could crunch the numbers with a calculator to get the right answer or who had memorized how to assemble parts. Collaboration. Our eLearning curricula should promote these 21 st century skills.
