Big Meeting on the Treaty this Week!

We expect that many of the big issues with the current text will get ironed out this week. After the last WIPO session in November, the World Blind Union convened a group of experts to review the current Treaty draft and make recommendations to the WBU on the most important issues for WBU to work on in this next session.

Fascinating Meeting at the Copyright Office

I came away with a much better understanding of the issues they are exploring and certainly did my part to articulate why I support the positions we have. We discussed Chafee, especially in the context of the Amazon text-to-speech brouhaha, and the proposed international treaty that was tabled at the WIPO SCCR meeting in Geneva last month.

Bookshare’s role was mixed: we didn’t end up attending many of these meetings and critiqued early efforts that were crippled by heavy-handed publisher influence, although we did propose at one point to supply technology to TIGAR based on Bookshare. The disability groups understood the issue, but didn’t want to agree to provide such a carrot.
