This is old-ish news, but the acquisition of companies behind open source software by big behemoths continues with the acquisition of Jabber by Cisco. Some folks think that the more users an open source project has, the better, and the healthier the ecosystem.

E-Mediat is funded by the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) of the United States Department of State with support and in-kind donations from Microsoft, Cisco and craigslist Charitable Fund. Azzam’s software and hard project allows people with quadriplegia, those who do not have use of their hands and arms, to use a computer.

Adobe, Cisco, Intuit, and Symantec are just a few. Cisco, Symantec, Adobe, Microsoft and others separately. Microsoft saw that it could reach more nonprofits with more software and the support to adopt it by partnering with us, and at the same time could build the capacity of the nonprofit sector. We could stop. Microsoft even.

Let's Encrypt is a project in cooperation with the University of Michigan, the nonprofit Mozilla, and TechSoup donor partner Cisco. The project aims to clear the remaining roadblocks to transition the web from [link] to https://. If just a fraction of the 70 million or so iPhone users adopt it, it will be a big deal.

Barclays Bank analyst Ben Reitzes forecasts a 6 percent year-over-year decline in the sales of PCs due to increasing adoption of tablet computers and smartphones. By 2020, Cisco forecasts that there will be 50 billion things connected to the Internet in this way. Mobile chip sales will overtake PC revenues in 2013.
