Soon afterwards in 2007, we won our first major award from the United States Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), which, in turn, allowed us to build Bookshare into a national asset. This experience helped us prove the potential of Bookshare to meet the needs of students with disabilities.

The new service allows users to make blog entries and comments, send and receive emails via their MySpace page, upload photos from their cellphones, and view or search for friends (videos will be supported sometime in 2007). Along with the increased use of SMS and mobile e-mail, people are sharing photos and video files.

The book is an expanded version of their seminal article in the Stanford Social Innovation Review from 2007, “Social Entrepreneurship: The Case for Definition.” Before Benetech was founded, blind people were read to either in person by a family member, volunteer, or paid reader, or via audio cassette tape. The first was the ebook.
