I learned this technique from Cheryl Francisconi, director of the IIE Addis-Ababa Office in Ethiopia, last month in Rwanda ,who uses a stone that has been held by many people. The value of doing an extended peer learning exchange is that participants get the opportunity to put the ideas in practice and apply what they learned.
